About our Church
COME JOIN US
We are people who are excited about having received God's gracious love in Jesus Christ. Our working and worshiping together seek to make that grace a life-changing experience for one another and for all whom God sends to us. Our story began in the late 1800s as Swedish immigrants formed a congregation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. More than 100 years later we have become a diverse congregation from many
backgrounds -- a family of faith that transcends our differences.

Come experience the connectedness of our church family, the strength of our faith, the gratitude, hope, and excitement we feel for our future together.

WHAT IS A COVENANT CHURCH?

We belong to a denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church, which is comprised of more than 700 congregations in the US and Canada, and many hundreds more worldwide.

What Characterizes a Covenant Church
  • Evangelical, but not exclusive
  • Biblical, but not doctrinaire
  • Traditional, but not rigid
  • Congregational, but not independent
WHAT DOES A COVENANT CHURCH BELIEVE?
On one level, the answer is quite simple. When new members join a Covenant church, they are asked two questions about belief: “Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior and promise to follow him as Lord?” and “Do you accept the Holy Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments, as the word of God and the only perfect rule for faith, doctrine, and conduct?” They are then asked if they intend to live as faithful followers of Christ and members of the church and denomination.

That’s all. That is enough.

But on another level, of course, the answer is a good deal more complex. While the Covenant Church does not require adherence to any written creed, we take our theology very seriously, and our history as well. We are a Reformation church, a part of the Church universal, and an evangelical church. In that heritage, we share certain central beliefs, which draw us together in faith and fellowship and make possible a freedom among us on more widely ranging issues.

A BRIEF HISTORY
In the late 1800s Cambridge, Massachusetts abounded with Swedish (and other) ethnic populations. The first Swedish language preaching services were held during the winter of 1881.
The Swedish Evangelical Mission Church of Cambridge was organized with 24 founding members in 1897. The church continued to hold Swedish language services in Cambridge until the mid 1930s.

In 1945, as the church was no longer exclusively Swedish, the church name was officially changed to the Evangelical Covenant Church of Cambridge. At the same time the church joined the Evangelical Covenant Church of America denomination. During the 1950s the congregation began exploring relocation. More space was needed for Sunday School classes and its members were moving out of Cambridge into the more suburban landscapes of Arlington and Lexington. In 1958 the church purchased 41 acres of land in Lexington. Construction of the current facility began in 1964. The first service in the Lexington church, our current facility, was held in June 1966.
